Tween Summer Reading Program 2019
(ages 11-12 yrs.)
Tweens are encouraged to participate in “A Universe of Stories,” the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library’s Tween Summer Reading Program. Tweens are invited to come to the library and read for prizes, as well as to take part in special events offered throughout the summer.

Mondays and Tuesdays: 
 10 AM – 12 PM (Library Tech Room)
Registration Starts: Tuesday, May 28th
Summer Reading Program Kick Off Carnival: June 7th at 6 PM (Sekula Memorial Library) 

Week 1

Monday, June 10, 2019
Ice Breaker Games
10:00 AM – Library Tech Room
Have fun, play games, get to know one another better, and find out what’s happening with this year’s Tween Summer Reading Program.

Tuesday, June 11, 2019
How to Build a Galaxy
10:00 AM– Library Tech Room
Learn about the galaxy, some of the history and science and then create a model of the Milky Way galaxy.

Week 2

Monday, June 17, 2019
Health in Space
10:00 AM– Library Tech Room
The health and safety of astronauts is an important factor to take into consideration.  What happens to the human body in space?  Learn about the challenge’s astronauts face (including some hands-on experimentation), as well as some ways they stay healthy.

Sci-Fi Internet Meme Making and Internet Safety
10:00 AM – Library Tech Room
Test out your computer skills and create your own memes, as well as learn about internet safety and finding reliable information sources.

Week 3

Monday, June 24, 2019
Ozone: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
10:00 AM– Library Tech Room
Learn about ozone and greenhouse gasses, both the good and the bad, and then make a spectroscope

Tuesday, June 25, 2019
Astronaut Training
10:00 AM – Library Tech Room
What does it take to be an astronaut?  Learn about trainings that astronauts go through, and then put your skills to the test.

Week 4

Monday, July 1, 2019
Life on Mars
10:00 AM – Library Tech Room
Learn about the red planet, its history, and its future; create your own “Martian” and experiment on how to protect it from the harsh environment of Mars.

Tuesday, July 2, 2019
Terrariums, Bio Domes, Artificial Environments and the “Goldilocks Zone”
10:00 AM– Library Tech Room
What does it take to survive in space?  What kind of planet can support life?  Learn about these topics, and then create a terrarium.

Week 5

Monday, July 8, 2019
The Moon, Our Closest Neighbor
10:00 AM– Library Tech Room
Learn about the moon, in history and legend, see what the moon looked like the day you were born, and create a necklace displaying that.

Tuesday, July 9, 2019
Movie and Book Discussion
10:00 AM – Library Tech Room
Enjoy a movie and discuss the book that was selected for the Tween Summer Reading Program.

Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Final day to turn in Reading Logs or input minutes read onto ReadSquared.
