City Council Proclaims May 14-20 as Food Allergy Awareness Week
Edinburg, Texas (May 3, 2017) – The Edinburg City Council proclaimed May 14-20, 2017 as Food Allergy Awareness Week in the City of Edinburg.
The week is dedicated to promote awareness and support for those who are impacted by food allergies. Approximately 15 million Americans, including six million children, are affected.
A food allergy is an immune system response to a food the body mistakenly believes is harmful. The result of a food allergy can be minor such as a skin rash, but can also be life-threatening like anaphylaxis.
Eight foods – peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish – account for 90 percent of all food allergy reactions.
While there is no cure for food allergies, strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.
