UTRGV Presents Edinburg Solid Waste Management with Distinguished Community Engagement Partner Award
Edinburg, Texas (April 20, 2017) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Office of Community Engagement and Assessment presented its Distinguished Community Engagement Partner Award to the City of Edinburg Solid Waste Management for providing learning and volunteer opportunities to students.
Director of Solid Waste Management Ramiro Gomez received the award at a ceremony at the PlainsCapital Bank Theater in the Student Union on the Edinburg Campus.
These awards are given to an individual or an organization that offers engaged learning opportunities for students while addressing community needs.
The city’s solid waste management department last fall worked with Dr. Dean Kyne, assistant professor of sociology, to develop and design two service-learning courses in environmental sociology. Students in Kyne’s class met with city waste management officials to learn about current waste management operations and what challenges the department faced. The students then had to do research and develop solutions that promote sustainable solid waste management.
