City Council Recognizes "As I Walk Through the Valley" Filmmakers Charlie Vela and Ronnie Garza

IMG_5795Edinburg, Texas (April 6, 2017) – The Edinburg City Council recognized Edinburg resident Charlie Vela and fellow filmmaker Ronnie Garza for their artistic accomplishments in the creation of the “As I Walk Through the Valley” documentary.

The film documents the musical history and Mexican-American culture of the Rio Grande Valley from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Vela and Garza compiled more than 100 hours of interviews as well as archival footage and photographs that help track the progression of the music scene in the Rio Grande Valley.

“As I Walk Through the Valley” was an official selection of the 2017 SXSW film and music festival in Austin. The film was a 2017 World Premiere documentary at SXSW.

The City of Edinburg’s South Texas International Film Festival will host the Rio Grande Valley Premiere of “As I Walk Through the Valley” on Saturday, April 8 at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium at 7 p.m. A special Q&A session with the filmmakers will follow as well as a music concert with some of the bands featured in the documentary.
