City Council Proclaims May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month in Edinburg
Edinburg, Texas (May 17, 2017) – The Edinburg City Council issued a proclamation to mark May 2017 as Elder Abuse Prevention Month in Edinburg.
Abuse of the elderly and people with disabilities is a wide-spread problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people across the country.
In Texas alone, there were 83,534 completed cases of abuse of elderly people and people with disabilities last year.
Elder abuse, however, often goes unreported because those who are abused find it very difficult to tell anyone and are usually ashamed or afraid.
The community is urged to work together to help reduce and prevent abuse and neglect of elderly people.
Residents can report cases of suspected abuse or neglect to Adult Protective Services.
