City Council Recognizes UTRGV Volleyball Team for Historic Season
Edinburg, Texas (Feb. 10, 2017) – The Edinburg City Council recognized the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team for its successful 2016 season – the best in program history. The Vaqueros posted a 21-14 overall record capturing its first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Championship and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance.
UTRGV opened the season capturing the Baylor Invitational Tournament Championship, which included a signature win over host Baylor University.
The team went on to win 10 matches in the month of September, marking the second most wins in a month in program history.
The Vaqueros won a record seven WAC matches and qualified for the WAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed. UTRGV knocked off No. 4 seed University of Missouri-Kansas City in the first round, No. 1 seed and host New Mexico State University in semifinals, and No. 2 seed Utah Valley University in the championship match.
Bojana Mitrovic and Alisha Watson earned All-WAC honors. Watson was named WAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
UTRGV led the WAC and ranked in the top 20 in the nation in kills, assists, digs, and blocks.
Ragni Steen Knudsen set a new program record for kills in a single season. Barbara Silva, Alexandra Ecker, and Mitrovic all surpassed the previous program record in block assists in a season. Silva also set new records for blocks per set and total blocks. Fatoumata Dacosta led the WAC and ranked in the top 20 in the nation in digs.
