Furloughed federal employees can apply for unemployment benefits

EDINBURG, TEXAS (Jan. 23, 2019) – The partial government shutdown, going on more than 30 days, has affected federal employees who are now going without pay. The shutdown started on Dec. 22, 2018 and has affected more than 800,000 federal workers nationwide and 35,000 Texans.

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) considers those employees affected by the current shutdown to be “laid off” from their jobs. If you or someone you know has been affected by the government shutdown, you are eligible to apply for benefits at the Texas Workforce Solutions website.

If you do not have Internet access, call 800-939-6631 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. For more information, you can also see Applying for Unemployment Benefits after a Federal Government Shutdown.
