In her letter, first-grader Crystal Pacheco asks for a ball, food and a blanket. She asked for a ball, so that she could share the toy with her brothers. Crystal’s teacher and principal shared her story on social media.

The outpouring of support from across the country to Crystal’s letter prompted the school’s staff to hold a blanket drive. Their goal was to raise 724 blankets, which is one for every student at their campus. However, as of Monday, Dec. 18, the school has collected approximately 1,000 blankets. School administrators will disburse the additional blankets to the students’ siblings and other students within Edinburg CISD.

More than 700 students, teachers and administrators are expected to attend the event, which includes a visit from Santa Claus.
