City Council Recognizes UTRGV Chess Team for National Championship Victory
EDINBURG, TEXAS (April 18, 2018) – The Edinburg City Council recognized the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Chess team at the city council meeting Tuesday evening for its first national championship in program history.
UTRGV had an outstanding performance at the 2018 President’s Cup which took place March 31 through April 1 at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City ending with a first place finish ahead of five-time national champions Webster University.
Other teams competing in the President’s Cup were St. Louis University and Texas Tech University.
UTRGV defeated Webster 7.5 to 7.0 en route to the national championship.
Previously, the Vaqueros had placed second in 2016.
Representing UTRGV were Grandmaster Andrey Stukopin, Grandmaster Carlos Hevia, Grandmaster Vladimir Belous, Grandmaster Kamil Dragun, and Hoovhannes Gabuzyan. The team is under the direction of Chess Coach Grandmaster Bartek Macieja.
