UTRGV School of Medicine Holds Unimvil Dedication Ceremony in Edinburg
Edinburg, Texas (Sept. 28, 2017) – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine held a dedication ceremony Thursday morning to celebrate the success of its medical mobile unit, Unimóvil at the UTRGV Edinburg Campus.
The ceremony also served as an opportunity to honor the United Health Foundation, which in 2015 awarded the School of Medicine a three-year $2.88 million grant to establish the Center for Colonia Integrated Care Program: VIDAS. The program was designed to build an integrated, inter-professional collaborative that would create a sustainable model for healthcare delivery to the most vulnerable members of the community.
Through this program, the School of Medicine purchased the Unimóvil, a 45-foot mobile clinic, in order to provide healthcare to people living in underserved communities.
Since it began operations, the Unimóvil has traveled almost 9,000 miles and provided care to approximately 2,000 patients. Most recently, a team of healthcare providers with the UTRGV School of Medicine traveled to Houston where they provided care to almost 100 patients affected by Hurricane Harvey.
