City Council Recognizes Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School Principal Arnoldo F. BenavidesRSS Feed

Edinburg, Texas (May 17, 2017) – The Edinburg City Council issued a proclamation to recognize Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School Principal, Arnoldo F. Benavides for his leadership, service and contributions to the Edinburg community.



Benavides joined the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District in 1971 as a junior high counselor.



He went on to serve as Director of the Head Start Training Center at the University of Texas Pan American for 12 years before returning to ECISD in 1984. Benavides held multiple roles with the district including principal for the alternative education program, principal of Robert E. Lee Elementary, coordinator of migrant discipline, and director of federal programs.



In 2001, Benavides served as regional director for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Texas Migrant Council Head Start program for three years.



He returned once again to ECISD in 2004 his current role as principal of Freddy Gonzalez Elementary. Under his leadership, Freddy Gonzalez Elementary has garnered many accolades.



In addition to his distinguished career in education, Benavides served the City of Edinburg as a city councilmember and mayor pro tem from 1997 to 2003.



Benavides earned a bachelor’s degree from Pan American College and a master’s degree from Texas Tech University.



Benavides is set to retire as principal of Freddy Gonzalez Elementary on June 16, 2017.
