Edinburg Launches Stenciling Project for Stormwater DrainsRSS Feed

EDINBURG, TEXAS (June 4, 2018) – The City of Edinburg Engineering Department began a stenciling project Monday morning to mark the City’s stormwater inlets with the message “Only rain down the drain!”

The project is part of the City’s Stormwater Program which is in accordance to the small municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4s) permit which requires best management practices including public education, outreach, and involvement.

Stormwater Specialist Robert Valenzuela said, “When it rains everything goes into our drains and goes out our ditches and out into Laguna Madre. A lot of people don’t understand that the sanitary sewer has a wastewater treatment plant, but our storm drain does not.”

Trash, chemicals, and other materials thrown down the stormwater drain will have an adverse effect. Chemicals dumped into the inlet are not treated and will make it into our waters and out into the Laguna Madre.

Additionally, trash can block the flow of water and can contribute to flooding including grass clippings or leaves.

“Any grass or leaves that gets into our system can also cause flooding,” Valenzuela said. “Grass and leaves can also create some algae which is harmful to our waters.”

The stencil marks will remind residents that only rainwater should go down the stormwater drain.

Residents are encouraged to report any illicit discharge to Stormwater hotline at 956-388-8999.
