Fire Prevention Program

Fire extinguishers play a vital role in saving lives and property by putting out and/or containing small fires until the fire department arrives. Although not knowing how and when to use a fire extinguisher can further endanger life and property. Our fire extinguisher training offers an in-depth look at the different types of fires and extinguishers. Participants will also get a better understanding of how fire behaves, evacuation plans and procedures, live fire demonstration and much more. The Fire Extinguisher program is provided by our department FREE of charge for entities such as churches, civic groups, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools (group of 10 or more). To schedule our Fire Extinguisher program for your entity (weather permitting) please submit a Public Education Request.

The Edinburg Fire Safety Team was established in 1997 by a few firemen seeking to create a new and exciting method to present fire safety to children. The program incorporates a theatrical performance utilizing fire safety education, music, special effects, and an All-Star cast of fire safety clowns and puppets. Our program is performed for both private and public schools in our community, which has allowed us to reach approximately 20,000 students yearly.

The Fire Safety Smoke House program gives our department the opportunity to teach fire safety on a more realistic level. Even though all the scenarios are only an imitation, participants get to experience a smoke-filled room, crawling low under smoke, beeping smoke alarms, and common mistakes made during emergencies. The presentation only lasts a few minutes, but the skills learned can last a lifetime. The Fire Safety Smoke House program is provided by our department FREE of charge for entities such as churches, civic groups, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools. To schedule our Fire Safety Smoke House for your next public event (weather permitting) please submit a Public Education Request.

The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that approximately 1,100 Americans age 65 and older die every year from household fires. The Edinburg Fire Marshal's Office has developed a fire education program called "Fire Prevention Loteria," which brings awareness and education to the senior citizens of our community. The program utilizes the traditional game of bingo and incorporates fire prevention materials. This summer program is made available to the adult daycare centers in our community, which provides us access to our target audience.
