Education

Edinburg CISD is located in the Educational Center of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and is a three-time “All American City”. ECISD students and teachers have received the highest academic awards at Region, State, and Federal levels.  Edinburg CISD is one of the most highly academically recognized school districts in the State of Texas.

Edinburg CISD innovates teaching and learning through Student, Parent, and Teacher Technology Conference and Camps.  As well as outstanding education opportunities Edinburg CISD Athletic programs develop the teamwork and discipline necessary to compete and succeed in an evolving job market.  The athletic programs are designed to develop a competitive edge and camaraderie.

Edinburg CISD also offers after-school programs that provide students with enriching opportunities to participate in create and engaging educational, athletic, and fine arts activities and programs. Edinburg CISD encompasses 945 square miles which makes it one of the largest in the nation. It includes four high schools, five alternative secondary schools, seven middle schools, and 30 elementary schools.  It is also home to University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley, Rio Grande  Bible Institute and Region One Education Service Center.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a public research university in the University of Texas System.  UTRGV was founded in 2013, and went into full operation in 2015 after the consolidation of University of Texas at Brownsville, Texas Southmost College, University of Texas-Pan American and UT Regional Academic Health Center.

The University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley is one of the largest universities in the United States to have 80% percent of its population be Hispanic students.

UTRGV has over 105 buildings spread out over Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, McAllen, Rio Grande City and South Padre Island. UTRGV offers over 64 bachelor’s, 49 master’s and 4 doctoral programs.  UTRGV has been ranked 6th among the 50 most affordable online MBA in Financial Planning degrees in the country.

With the growing population UTRGV is currently building new facilities which include: New Science Research Building (Edinburg), New Academic Building (Brownsville) and Medical Education Building (Edinburg).

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine

In 2016, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to offer a medical residency program in psychiatry.

UTRGV Medical School has founded the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute. As well as sponsored seven medical residency programs at five Valley hospitals: Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, McAllen Medical Center, Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville, and Knapp Medical Center.

UTRGV Medical School has received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and has completed its $54 million medical education building on the Edinburg campus, before welcoming its first cohort of 55 students in June 2016.

Texas A&M University – within 1 mile radius

In September 2015, Texas A&M University System, City of McAllen and Hidalgo County signed a letter of intent to expand Texas A&M presence inthe Rio Grande Valley and create new higher education options for students.

In 2018, Texas A&M completed a $40 million higher education center in McAllen.  It includes classrooms, laboratories, and an excellent student services program.  The goal of the new facility is to meet the educational needs of the students in the Rio Grande Valley.

Programs that will be offered are Engineering, Engineering Technology, Biomedical Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences.  Courses are taught by Texas A&M faculty and graduates will receive the iconic Aggie ring.
