Teen Summer Reading Program (Ages 13-17)

Teen Summer Reading Program 2019
(ages 13-17 yrs.)
Teens are encouraged to participate in “A Universe of Stories,” the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library’s Teen Summer Reading Program.  Teens are invited to come to the library and read for prizes, as well as to take part in special events offered throughout the summer.

Wednesdays and Thursdays: 6 PM – 8 PM (Library Meeting Room)
Registration Starts: Tuesday, May 28th
Summer Reading Program Kick Off Carnival: June 7th at 6 PM (Sekula Memorial Library) 

Week 1

Wednesday, June 12, 2019
Icebreakers
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Teens will be playing some icebreakers such as Two Truths and a Lie, Moon Landing, and Candy Ice Breaker.

Thursday, June 13, 2019
The Big Bang Theory
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Presenter:
Hyun-chul Lee, Ph.D., UTRGV Lecturer III

Teens will work together in groups on a variety of Big Bang Theory activities such as Expanding Universe Demo, Doppler Effect Demo, and Doppler Effect and Red-Shift of Stars Diagram.

Week 2

Wednesday, June 19, 2019
Environmental Science, Conservation, and Preservation
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Presenter:
Amit U. Raysoni, Ph.D., M.P.H, UTRGV Assistant Professor – Air Quality

Teens will learn about the Introduction to Environment Science, the differences between Preservation and Conservation, and the term, The Tragedy of the Commons. Then, they will participate in an activity that will help clarify this term.

The Solar System
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Teens will work in small groups on Planetary Properties activity.

Week 3

Wednesday, June 26, 2019
Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Presenter:
Hyun-chul Lee, Ph.D., UTRGV Lecturer III

Teens will learn the difference between meteorites, asteroids, and comets. They will also learn how to paint an Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower using watercolor paints.

Stars and Galaxies
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Presenter:
Hyun-chul Lee, Ph.D., UTRGV Lecturer III

Teens will be using the Star in a Box app online to work on a variety of activities that explore the evolution of the sun and stars. They will also get the opportunity to make their own galaxy using a variety of materials.

The Ozone Layer: Importance and the Harmful Effects of Thinning

Presenter:

Teens will work in groups on Ozone Layer, Air Pollution, and Future Environmental Concerns activites.

Space Exploration
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
Teens will first learn about the History and Future of Space Exploration. Then, they will get a chance to work together in groups of four to design and make their own Solar Sails using different materials.

Thursday, July 11, 2019
Movie and Book Discussion
6:00 PM – Library Meeting Room
A movie will be shown related to this year’s Summer Reading Program theme followed by a book discussion. 

Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Final day to turn in Reading Logs or input minutes read onto ReadSquared.
