Our primary goal at the Sekula Memorial Library is to provide free resources for information, education and recreation that will enrich and enhance the lives and minds of our community. 

Teen and Tween Summer Reading Program 2021

Space is limited for in-person programs (1st come, 1st serve).  Social distancing and face masks recommended for all in-person programs.

Week 1 - Bookish Beasts

Teen/Tween SRP Orientation

Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will play icebreaker games about themselves to get to know each other. These games include Two Truths and a Lie, Caption This, and Candy Ice Breaker.

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Habitats and Rainforest in a Jar
6:00 PM – In-Person
Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will make their own Rainforest in a Jar with real moss and learn about different habitats. They will then get to take their own Rainforest home!

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Air-Dry Clay Dragons
6:00 PM – In-Person
Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will learn about different types of dragons from the Wings of Fire series. Then, they will take a quiz to find out which dragon from the Wings of Fire they are. Based on their results, they can then create a dragon of their own out of air-dry clay.

Blue Dragon Anime and Painting Air-Dry Clay Dragons

Teens and Tweens will learn about the history of anime. Then, they will watch Blue Dragon anime and paint their Air-Dry Clay Dragons. Afterwards, they will compete by voting on the top three dragon figurines.

Teens and Tweens will color intricate owl coloring pages. They will also receive their own Bird-Watching 101 handouts so they can try bird-watching at home.

Bird Feeder Tutorial

Teens and Tweens will make their own bird feeder that they will be able to take home and put up outside. They will also learn about different birds.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will learn about Pokémon the series and the characters featured in it. Then, they will watch an episode from the Sun & Moon series and will compete over Pokémon trivia to see who the biggest fan is.

Owl Fiction Books and Felt Owl

Teens and Tweens will learn how to make their own Felt Owl using sewing materials. They will also learn about the owl-related fiction we have at the library and take home their own owl creations!

Veterinarian Presentation & Kahoot! Trivia

Library ERC

For this presentation, a veterinarian will join the Zoom call to present to the teens and tweens on how to take care of pets. Then they will compete using Kahoot!

Pet Store Presentation

Library ERC

Petco will come to the library in person to show the teens and tweens different animals, and to talk about them. They will learn about different pets that are available at the pet store and the materials that the pet store has.

Pet Fiction and Activity

Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will compete in different pet-themed activities for a cool, pet-related prize. They will also see which pet-related fiction the library carries.

Naruto and Pet BFF Necklace

Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will watch Naruto as they work on today’s craft: matching necklaces for them and their pet with a picture in it.

Week 4 - Animal-Themed Superheroes

Comics and Superheroes Trivia!
6:00 PM – In-Person
Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will learn about the history of Marvel Comics and The Falcon, Spiderman, Black Panther, Ant-man, The Wasp, Black Widow, and Squirrel Girl. Then they will compete in a game of trivia to find the biggest superhero fan.

Teens and Tweens will make their very own superhero masks using sewing supplies. Then they will take home their masks to clean and use!

Teens and Tweens will discuss how animals communicate and view new technology for animal communication. They will learn about Coco the gorilla, who learned sign language, and Animal-Computer Interaction.

Service/Emotional Support Animals Presentation

Library ERC

A staff member from UTRGV’s Office of Student Life and Dean of Students services will give a presentation about the difference between a Service animal and an Emotional Support animal. They will also explain to the teens and tweens how their students can qualify for a Service or an Emotional Support animal. 

Week 5 – Read, Connect, and Protect

Famous Animals and their Protectors

Teens and Tweens will play a game of ultimate trivia about animal scientists and famous animals. Then they will play the ‘Who Protected Me?’ Game.

Bug Hotels

Teens and Tweens will make their very own Bug hotel and learn about different insects. Then they can take home their Bug hotel to place in their backyard!

A staff member from the animal shelter will give a presentation about how animals are protected and the services they provide. They will teach the teens and tweens about how to adopt a pet.

Animal Protection Books & Animal-Safe Recipes

Library ERC

Teens and Tweens will follow a vegan recipe to make a snack that both they and their pet can enjoy. They will learn about vegan recipe books at the library and books on animal protection. Then they can take home their snack for them and their pets to enjoy! 

Week 6- Amazing Creatures

Teens and Tweens will make their own Butterfly Puddler that they can take home and place in their backyard. They will also learn about butterflies.
