Hidalgo County Judge and Governor Abbott Issue Disaster Declaration Proclamation

Judge Richard F. Cortez has issued a proclamation declaring a local state of disaster due to the expected flooding from Hurricane Hanna. This declaration will take effect immediately according to Cortez and will last for seven days, unless extended by Commissioners Court.

In a letter to Governor Greg Abbott, Judge Cortez stated that Hurricane Hanna “is of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capability of the local jurisdiction to control.”

The declaration states, “the Judge of the County of Hidalgo has determined that extraordinary measures must be taken to protect the public health, safety and general wellbeing of County citizens, in order to alleviate the suffering of people and to protect or rehabilitate property.”

Governor Abbott also held a briefing, press conference on Hurricane Hanna and issued a disaster declaration to 32 counties including Hidalgo and Cameron county.  For more information on this brifing visit the Texas Official page HERE.
