SGT. Jacob De La Garza North Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The City of Edinburg has officially renamed North Park after a hometown hero, Sergeant Jacob De la Garza.
Sergeant De la Garza was born and raised in Edinburg before leaving his to protect our country as a United States Marines in 2003, doing a total of 3 tours to Iraq.
Sergeant De la Garza retired in December 2012 after a severe injury that caused him to lose his leg. We are proud and honored to rename this park after an Edinburg native who sacrificed his life to protect our nation.
“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege,” Anita de Leon, Sergeant Jacob’s mother said during a ribbon cutting ceremony that occurred on Friday, November 6, 2020.
Sergeant Jacob De la Garza North Park is approximately 4 acres with multiple amenities. This park includes a walking trail, a full-sized basketball court and soccer field. A large playscape and a splash pad are also on site along with water stations. It also includes Edinburg’s first dog park with designated sections for both small and larger dogs along with play equipment. The construction of a new fitness court will also begin sometime between January and February of 2021.
