Currently a number of COVID-19 vaccines are being under clinical trials while others are already available for use. These vaccines help our bodies develop immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 without us having to get the illness. The FDA will review the results of trials for all vaccines before approving COVID-19 vaccines for use. The data must show that the vaccines are safe and effective before the FDA can give emergency use authorization.
The State of Texas, Hidalgo County and The City of Edinburg are doing everything in their power to help not only with the administration of vaccines to our community, but in informing the community of these available vaccines. Please open the tabs below to read more on available vaccines most convenient to you. Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Texas Military Department (TMD) have confirmed a growing number of counties participating in the Save Our Seniors initiative. The Governor announced the Save Our Seniors program in Corpus Christi in February to ensure more seniors are vaccinated throughout the state.
TDEM and TMD will work alongside local jurisdictions to set up a central drive-through vaccine clinics in each community or administer directly to homebound seniors — these decisions will be driven by local officials as they identify vulnerable residents in their communities to participate in this program.
DSHS announced that they have directed vaccine providers to prioritize people 80 years old or older when scheduling appointments and accommodate anyone in that age group who presents for vaccination, whether or not they have an appointment, by immediately moving them to the front of the line. That will ensure vaccination of anyone 80 or older with as small a burden on themselves as possible.
All registration for the program is done via phone by calling the hotline registration number at 1-888-728-0018.
